No Better Funemployment: Yosemite National Park

August 16, 2015

In the fall of 2015, I accepted a full-time job. I pinched my pennies, balanced my checkbook, and figured out exactly how long I could not work before 1) my bills would be reported to a collections agency, and 2) my new employer would tell me to buzz off because they needed me to start sooner. The answer ended up being 5 weeks.

Five weeks of free time!

We loaded up my partner's 1977 Westfalia, chugged our way up into the Sierras, and lived in the wilderness for part of that time.

Yosemite National Park, at the time we were there, had a case of human-caught bubonic plague reported. Halfway through our stay, rodents in our campground also tested positive for the plague. Placards around the grounds and rangers passing us on the roads warned us that we had 5 days to evacuate the site before they were to fumigate it. While most people left immediately, we enjoyed the solitude of the campground.

The trails were only ours.
